Girl thought she was too young to get pregnant
Article Abstract:
In the UK about 8,400 schoolgirls under 16 become pregnant every year. The government promised to halve this by the year 2000 in its White Paper 'The Health of the Nation.' A typical day at a Brook Advisory Centre might include 16 crisis consultations in 45 visits. In London 9% of clients are under 16. Many of them come from divorced families where they have to grow up quickly. Brook centres are popular for their anonymity. Sex education is inappropriately given and unrealistic.

How the surgeon's cautious cuts make sense and save money
Article Abstract:
There is still considerable disagreement between doctors about which patients should be recommended for surgery and which operations are really beneficial. The NHS Research and Development Task Force is now looking at ways of ensuring that sound research is undertaken to back up investment in certain operations. It is also seeking to ensure that UK research does not become too expensive for the NHS, and must evaluate the real cost of research inside the health service.

Cancer girl loses fight for treatment
Article Abstract:
A High Court ruling that Cambridge Health Authority had acted unlawfully in refusing treatment costing 75,000 pounds sterling to a 10-year-old girl dying from an acute form of leukaemia has been overturned by the Court of Appeal. The case is regarded as forming the basis for rationing in the health service. The health authority believes that the money could be better spent on other patients, as the girl's chances of recovery are very poor.
