Private goes a little public
Article Abstract:
Competition between private banks is increasing, despite the pre-tax losses made by most during the recession. Their main work involves fee-based services. The number of high-income people who need money management advice is increasing. Some customers transfer from clearing banks whose services have declined in quality. Private banks aim to preserve customers' wealth and spending power. They target the lower end of the customer field, but most require a minimum annual income of 50,000 pounds sterling.

Swaps boom worries regulators. (new rules sought for derivatives market)_
Article Abstract:
Banking regulators are concerned over the huge growth in the derivatives market and are considering drafting new international rules. The market which includes futures, options and swaps was almost non-existent in 1981; in 1991 the value was $3,800 billion. Regulators have no way of assessing how much of the derivatives market is high-risk because they do not appear on banks' balance sheets. They fear another debt crisis similar in proportion to the property lending excess of the 80s.

Banks hone new cutting edge at the top
Article Abstract:
Financial competition has introduced changing selection criteria for high-level bankers, who used to be those who had worked their way up in the same bank since leaving school, with no experience of business. Chairmen were usually from outside bankin. In the 90's those who do work their way up have received management training. Brief details are given about the managing directors of British banks in 1992.
