Giscard d'Estaing bides his time
Article Abstract:
French elections to be held on 21 and 28 March, 1993 are almost certain to result in a Conservative government replacing the present Socialist one. Former president Valery Giscard d'Estaing expects little change however until the presidential elections in April 1995 and the departure of the incumbent president Francois Mitterrand. Until then cohabitation will take place, a Conservative government and cabinet with a Socialist president. One of the most important legislative matters to face the new government will be to make the Bank of France completely independent in time for European monetary union.

For Mitterand the imperial age is over
Article Abstract:
The French National Assembly elections on Sunday Mar 21, 1993 are expected to result in a cohabitation, with a conservative cabinet and a Socialist president, Francois Mitterand. Polls predict 420 of the 577 seats will be won by the right. This would result in a complete restructuring of French politics. President Mitterand is due to leave in May 1995, when municipal elections will be held.
