The cost of finding things out
Article Abstract:
A highly rated UK university department has hinted it might in future only accept PhD students who already have in place sponsorship from industry as otherwise funding invariably proved inadequate. Science departments are often unable to provide even adequate support to postgraduate research and training. A working group has been set up under the president of Templeton College, Oxford, Clark Brundin, to look at postgraduate support. It will decide on both the appropriate level of support and also the various responsibilities of the funding organisations.

Thinkers versus managers
Article Abstract:
The British Academy administers funds for postgraduate humanities research. Doctoral completion rates are poor. Nearly half of the students do not complete as some topics are too ambitious. A research council might be a better manager, as for sciences and social sciences. Research projects will be funded by research councils alone in the future. Increased teaching loads leave no time for term-time research. The merging of polytechnics and universities makes the future of humanities scholarship uncertain.

The money's on the masters market
Article Abstract:
There are over 4,500 graduate courses in 1993, 1,500 more than in 1992. Some of the subjects are exotic: popular music studies, mid-life crisis and humour and society; and some are for health sciences. In 1994 at least one in six graduates will be unemployed, adding to the 20,000 already out of work. Postgraduate courses are self-financing. The National Postgraduate Committee has produced guidelines for the courses' quality.
