Give cash to families, not nations, says Cook
Article Abstract:
It is vital to put an end to the conflict which has prevented Holocaust survivors and other victims of the Nazis from learning what happened to the extremely large sums in gold and other assets taken from them during the second world war, according to UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook. He has suggested the creation of a 40 million pounds sterling fund offering direct assistance to survivors of concentration camps and their families. Representatives of 41 governments will shortly attend a conference which aims to uncover the truth about what happened to the gold looted by the Nazis.

Belgium opens old war wounds
Article Abstract:
Moves by the regional parliament in Flanders, Belgium, to give cash compensation to Flemish people convicted as Nazi collaborators after the second world war have revived long-standing conflict between the Flemings and the Walloons about Nazi collaboration. The regional parliament's decision has caused offence to many Walloons, especially as it was only passed with the support of an extreme right-wing Flemish separatist party. Walloons point out that, of 70,000 Belgian prisoners of war, only 3,000 were Flemish.

Peace tower tribute to war dead that Ireland forgot
Article Abstract:
The Irish and UK governments have jointly funded a peace tower to commemorate those who died in the first world war. The tower is located on the Messines Ridge battlefield south of Ypres, Belgium, the only place where Protestant and Catholic Irish soldiers fought together on the British side in Aug 1917. This development marks the end of 80 years during which the Republic of Ireland failed to recognize that southern soldiers fought on the British side during the first world war.
