Give us more ambition, Tony

Article Abstract:

The Labour party has still not really recovered from the damage to its intellectual self-confidence which it suffered during the years of strong Conservative government in the 1980s. It has attempted to align itself with new social trends, promising to make improvements in the running of the economy, but has still not really been able to convince voters. It will only be successful if it can show the political will and courage to stick to an independent monetary and exchange rate policy.

Take a stake in the jobs market

Article Abstract:

The Labour party's concept of a stakeholder economy derives many of its elements from the system of coordinated capitalism which operates in northern Europe, especially in Germany. Its basis is the idea of giving employees a stake in their own concerns through participation, improved security and skill development. This would not function effectively in the UK, which has a strongly Anglo-Saxon market economy, unless it were significantly changed.

New Labour: friend or foe?

Article Abstract:

A future Labour government in the UK would have a considerable impact on investments. Such a government would probably focus on more rapid economic expansion and reducing unemployment. Higher inflation would turn investors away from long-dated gilts and bonds, while higher rate taxpayers would probably move into index-linked gilts. It is likely that equity portfolios would move towards stocks which can produce higher growth in the long term.
