Gloating over the euro's slide may well be premature
Article Abstract:
The new European currency, the euro, has dropped in value, and this has been linked to recession in mainland Europe. Some European countries are showing slow growth, but others are growing strongly, and the United Kingdom has lower growth than even the slower members of the new monetary union. Britain also has lower incomes than the average for the euro area, and is lagging in productivity, while inequality is also a serious problem in the UK. The benefits of the single European currency may become more apparent when pound sterling starts to drop in value.

Euro area to swim against global tide
Article Abstract:
There are 11 countries involved in European monetary union (Emu) and they look set to enjoy economic growth in contrast to other areas. Russia and Asia face crises, while recession is feared in the United Kingdom, and US growth appears to be slackening. The Euro area will have to rely less on exports if it is to grow, due to problems elsewhere. Domestic demand should be boosted by low interest rates and increases in government spending with lower taxes.
