Mandelson and the Ministry of Sorrows
Article Abstract:
The UK Dept of Trade and Industry (DTI) has gained a negative reputation for bringing political careers to an end. Its officials have for many years been struggling to deal with many rapid changes in style, policy and staff, and this has led to a significant decline in morale. Furthermore, the DTI has a poor reputation among business leaders. The main task of new Trade and Industry Secretary Stephen Byers will be to rebuild confidence within the DTI.

Cracking the code for the mother of all mergers
Article Abstract:
BT is now a market-driven company, in contrast to being technology-driven in the mid-1980s, according to chief executive Sir Peter Bonfield. He believes that the company still has the potential to be more responsive, and that this will take place in the near future. His main challenge at present is negotiating the company's merger with Cable and Wireless, which has already received extensive media scrutiny.
