Glow-worms go dark all over Britain
Article Abstract:
There is anecdotal evidence indicating a decline in the number of glow-worms in the UK. Some observers believe that this is attributable to the increased use of insecticides, while others highlight loss of habitat. Alan Stewart, a research scientist at the University of Sussex, believes that male glow-worms could be confused by road lighting, thus hampering their efforts to find glowing females. This research builds on the already established fact that glow-worms flourish best in very dark places.

Winchester College's 100m pounds sterling housing scheme could spoil the character of historic city
Article Abstract:
The 300-acre Barton Farm estate on the edge of Winchester, England, where 2,000 houses could be built, could be sold by Winchester College, the oldest public school in the UK. This plan was opposed by a government planning inspector in 1997, but the school has made it clear that it is still willing to sell the land. Opposition has also been expressed by local politicians of all parties. There are fears that a large development would have a negative impact on the character of the historic city.
