Good news: we're making movies. Bad news: they're all American
Article Abstract:
There are some positive trends in the UK film industry, and there have been some very successful films recently, including 'Four Weddings and a Funeral,' 'The Crying Game' and 'The Madness of King George.' Furthermore, British actors and film-makers have been winning international awards. There is a general atmosphere of confidence, especially as cinema audiences grow. However, almost all the films being made in flourishing studios in the UK are in fact American. The UK government has failed to provide adequate funding for the industry, and many talented people are being lured to Hollywood.

His films are acclaimed around the world. So why do we find Mike Leigh so hard to love?
Article Abstract:
Film director Mike Leigh has attracted very mixed reactions throughout a career which has also involved television and the theatre. His individuality of character has often prevented his work from gaining the recognition which it has deserved, and he has only recently won the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes film festival. He has constantly refused to compromise, but this may now at last be working in his favour. He is extremely curious about character, and his work reflects many of the contradictions of UK society as a whole.

In Camelot, they make magic
Article Abstract:
Camelot, the company which runs the National Lottery, already has the prospect of large financial rewards. It had originally predicted that it would go into profit in its fourth year of operation, but this now seems likely to take place before the end of the first year. It has not given any reasons for the fact that income is much greater than its own expectations, but has admitted that it has been keeping 12.15% of the lottery proceeds.
