Government commits 300m pounds sterling to create 30,000 childcare clubs
Article Abstract:
The UK government is aware that affordable childcare is a key element in encouraging single parents to return to work. For this reason, it will invest 300 million pounds sterling in creating 30,000 after-school clubs with places for 1 million children. These facilities will be staffed by 50,000 young people trained under the welfare-to-work programme. The policy has been welcomed by single parents' groups, but there is still concern about the fate of single parents who are willing to work but cannot do so.

Childcare policy makes Britain child-friendly
Article Abstract:
The UK government is to issue a white paper on national childcare strategy on May 19, 1998. This will state that drama, arts and sport will form a vital element of after-school clubs, and will oblige local authorities to undertake an audit of all childcare in their area by the end of 1998, thus allowing targets to be set in the 1999 budget. Secretary of State for Social Security and Minister for Women Harriet Harman has stated that the government regards childcare as being a very important economic policy.

What children really fear: their parents fighting
Article Abstract:
Worries about violence affect 82% of British children, according to research undertaken for NCH Action for Children. Minister for Women Harriet Harman has responded directly to this research, making a commitment to concerted government action. She believes that the government can play a role in changing the public's attitude towards domestic violence, ensuring that it is no longer tolerated. Children are also concerned about possible unemployment and about alcohol and drug abuse.
