Halewood secures baby Jaguar with 50m pounds sterling DTI grant
Article Abstract:
The UK Dept of Trade and Industry will contribute 50 million pounds sterling towards investment of 400 million pounds sterling by Ford Motor in producing a new small executive class Jaguar car at its plant in Halewood, England. The investment plan has been warmly welcomed by Halewood workers, as it had been feared that the plant would be closed down. Of 4,500 jobs at the site, 3,000 will now be secured. Production of the new car, known currently as the X400, will start in 2001, with output rising to 100,000 units a year.

Some big mistakes in the planning of a new small car
Article Abstract:
BMW was successful in taking publicity away from Mercedes-Benz at the 1997 Frankfurt motor show by launching its new Mini, three years before it is due to go on sale. However, it is possible to question whether this car is actually the best one the company could have developed for the 21st century. It will certainly sell in large numbers initially, but has not met expectations as an inventive, forward-thinking car. Far more vision has been shown in the design of Mercedes-Benz's A-class and Smart models.

Of babes and 'bahn stormers
Article Abstract:
Many extremely interesting new concepts are on display at the 1997 Frankfurt Motor Show. Mainstream new models have become much more innovative, and there are also many 'new wave' cars. The model attracting most attention is the small three-cylinder rear-engined 'city coupe' developed by Smart, which is backed by Swatch and Mercedes-Benz. This is colourful, only 2.5 mt long and has a top speed of 85mph. It will be available in eight countries in continental Europe from spring 1998.
