Grey skies and blue seas
Article Abstract:
Novelist Barry Unsworth feels that he has been particularly influenced by Eudora Welty and Carson McCullers. He does not regard himself as an exile, even though he lives in Umbria, Italy, but acknowledges that he is a perennial outsider. He has become cut off from the UK, but does not feel cut off from his Englishness. He believes that he is seeking a balance between seclusion and isolation. He is nostalgic for the UK, but does not really know what he is nostalgic for.

Gone fishing, for the truth
Article Abstract:
Novelist and poet James Hamilton-Paterson has come to associate the UK closely with boredom. This is why he has chosen to live permanently abroad, dividing the year between the Philippines and Tuscany, Italy. He feels that his latest book, 'America's Boy: The Marcoses and the Philippines,' was written out of a sense of anger that the Philippines is often misrepresented. He regards much writing about the Philippines as merely jokes at the expense of ordinary Filipinos.

A shadow of death in Arcadia
Article Abstract:
A novelist should be both part of society and detached from it, according to William Riviere. He believes that Italians have not yet come to terms with the country's Fascist past, a subject he addresses in his new novel, 'Kate Caterina.'
