What kind of peace process ignores the Provos' murders?
Article Abstract:
It appears that the murder of Charles Bennett in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was carried out by the Provisional IRA as a gesture to appease those who feel that the movement is softening its stance. Against the background of this murder, it is clear that the Good Friday peace agreement means nothing to the hardliners within the Provisional IRA. In moral terms, the 1998 referendum, in which Irish people voted overwhelmingly for peace, undermines the hardline Provisionals. However, this murder shows that the Provisionals are prepared to overlook the democratic view of the Irish people.
