Gripped by the urgency of 'now.' (Brazilian fiction)(bibliography)(Bibliography)
Article Abstract:
Many of the reference points in modern Brazilian fiction come from outside the country. Authors are more influenced by the 'today' than by Brazil itself, and generally treat Brazil as a historical entity. Rubem Fonseca's 'The Lost Manuscript,' for example, makes reference to Ian Fleming, Chekhov, Orson Welles and Maupassant, while even the bit-characters have European names. Ana Cristina Cesar's 'Intimate Diary' shows the author renouncing Brazil altogether and travelling around western Europe.

A name to conjure with
Article Abstract:
Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago believes that the Nobel Prize is a form of respect for writers who, like him, came from a very humble background. He believes that, although he no longer experiences hunger himself, he can still feel the hunger of others. He feels that character, rather than plot, is the key element of the way in which he now writes. He likes his novels to be seen as extended essays, believing that the time for the great narrative novel was in the 19th century.
