Groping in fog for the right approach
Article Abstract:
UK airports could lose custom to other European airports if the instrument landing system is not replaced, as it is essential to maintain Category IIIb in the UK because fog is common. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) will pass on some of its radio frequencies covered by international treaty in 1998. ICAO has used the Microwave Landing System (MLS) since 1970, but it has not been adopted world-wide. Satellite-based systems will eventually be sufficiently accurate for this purpose, but will not handle up to Category III until the next century.

You make me feel virtually real
Article Abstract:
Advanced computer animation techniques were used by Pixar to produce the film 'Toy Story' for Disney. The actors are in fact no more than lines of computer instructions, but the resulting film is impressive. Sets were created inside a computer as three-dimensional locations for the 'actors,' and have been made to look extremely realistic. The film is made more realistic by deliberately using camera shots from live-action directors.
