Gun salutes and grateful thanks ... the perfect goodbye Hong Kong dreams of
Article Abstract:
Weihaiwei, part of Shandong province, China, transferred to British control under a lease signed on Jul 01, 1898, at the same time as British control over Hong Kong was agreed. The area, covering 288 sq miles and 128,000 inhabitants, was to remain in British hands for as long as Port Arthur was occupied by Russia. The Russian occupation of Port Arthur ended in 1905, but Weihaiwei was not handed back to China until 1930. The transfer of power was accompanied by mixed feelings, as is now the case as Hong Kong prepares to transfer to Chinese sovereignty.

Enter the dragon: Shanghai comeback challenges financial might of Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
The city of Shanghai, China, is seeking to regain the status as a financial centre which it held in the 1930s. It aims to become China's national financial centre before the end of the 1990s, expanding to become Asia's regional financial centre by 2005 and a world financial centre in 2010. If this plan is successful, then Shanghai will be at least as powerful financially as Hong Kong is today. It is undergoing extensive physical changes, with annual promised overseas investment having exceeded $10 billion since 1994.
