The Britons had sneered and bullied and ruled the roost. No one in Hong Kong, however amnesiac, could ignore that sordid heritage
Article Abstract:
The handover of Hong Kong to China by the UK had been planned for many years, but there were still some uncertainties with respect to diplomatic etiquette at the very last minute. The reaction among ordinary Hong Kong residents to the transfer of sovereignty to China was generally rather muted, even though they welcomed the end of the colonial era. There are still uncertainties about the future of Hong Kong under Chinese rule, but China has not cracked down on democracy in Hong Kong, as many had predicted it would.

Incense, icons and faith
Article Abstract:
It is becoming increasingly common for westerners to turn to the eastern Orthodox church. This church is the very opposite of modernity, but this is what seems to be its strength in today's society. People welcome its simplicity and the fact that it focuses on God, rather than on people and the world. It offers a feeling of confidence and tranquility that is often lacking in the modern world, and for many people is the end of a long spiritual journey.

Ruined lives in a blighted landscape
Article Abstract:
Vukovar is a ghost town with no running water, shops or cafes. Army authorisation is needed to enter the region. Officially, 10,000 people have returned but only about 1,000 live there. Checkpoints, devastation and emptiness deter Croats from returning home. United Nations peacekeepers may help them feel safe but unresolved politics causes them to remain bitter. A power struggle between Serbs curtails freedom.
