Hands off my chest, doctor
Article Abstract:
It is common in the UK for doctors to examine a woman's breasts routinely when taking a smear, prescribing the contraceptive pill or placing the woman on hormone replacement therapy. However, some medical experts are now questioning this practice, claiming that there is no evidence to show that breast examination by health professionals of well women is effective. They feel that routine breast examination can give women false reassurance or raise unnecessary anxiety, and believe that women themselves are in the best position to judge whether the state of their breasts has changed at all.

Why we need flour power
Article Abstract:
It is now widely accepted that folic acid plays a significant role in reducing cases of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. The UK government has sought to make women who are likely to become pregnant aware of the need to increase their folic acid intake, but this campaign has largely been unsuccessful. Furthermore, this approach is not effective for women who become pregnant accidentally or who do not have access to health information. For this reason, some observers believe that flour should be fortified with folic acid.

Why men need to be screened, too
Article Abstract:
Screening and publicity campaigns for cancer of the prostate are called for as it causes 8,000 deaths a year, compared to 2,000 deaths from cancer of the cervix, for which screening is available. The prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) and a rectal examination will be available through Private Patients Plan from Jan 1993. Some surgeons wish for a trial to evaluate the value of screening. A group of Bristol urologists discovered seven cancers in 500 men screened. The US National Cancer Institute is conducting a large trial.
