Harsh times ahead for fragile economy
Article Abstract:
The Highlands and Scottish islands face a 1992 economic crisis. Unemployment is above the Scottish average at 11%. Serious job losses in oil, agriculture and fishing are expected. Reduced subsidies from the European Common Agricultural Policy will affect farming especially crofters. Fishing is threatened by cheaper Norwegian imports. Tourism which employs 30,000 people is decreasing. The phasing out of the UK Atomic Energy Authority's Dounreay complex and the US base's withdrawal from the Cowal Peninsula in 1992 will cut further jobs. The area is suffering from a population decrease as youngsters emigrate.

King Franz of Scotland?
Article Abstract:
There is still a very contradictory attitude towards the monarchy in Scotland. In a recent telephone poll, 56% of Scots expressed opposition to the monarchy, and Alex Salmond, Scottish National Party leader, claimed in response that the British royal family has been discredited. However, the party is still sticking to the idea that an independent Scotland should retain the royal family as head of state. One solution may be to have a monarch who is limited to a minor role in Scotland and has no connections with the British establishment. A possible candidate would be Prince Franz of Bavaria.
