Has Rupert Murdoch just torpedoed the Tory party?
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party remains committed to opposing UK membership of European economic and monetary union (EMU) in the next parliament, even though it is also seeking to present itself as the party of true pragmatism. The Conservatives are clearly willing to gamble almost all their chances of a recovery on a win in a referendum on this subject. It is easy to interpret this stance as not being a threat to Prime Minister Tony Blair, but it is unlikely that Blair is taking this view. The issue of EMU is becoming increasingly closely linked with electoral reform, as electoral reform would make it possible for pro-European Conservatives to create a separate party.
