He did it for Alvin Stardust and Chris Rea: can he do it for Blair?
Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy surrounds Michael Levy, a successful businessman who has become the UK Labour party's chief fundraiser. There is particular debate about the 'blind trust' he created, which allows people to make anonymous donations to the party. This is regarded by some members of the party as too secretive for a party which has traditionally been very open about the sources of its funds. He adopts a very straightforward approach to encouraging people to give money, in sharp contrast to the usually very reserved British style.

Regulators caught in cross-fire
Article Abstract:
The London Docklands Development Corp has been responsible for a high level of urban regeneration in the Docklands region, including a new railway system, a new road network and the largest office block in the UK. However, it has always faced strong hostility, and is to be wound up in 1998. By that time, it will have invested around 2 billion pounds sterling of public funds, and even its strongest critics have acknowledged that some form of development agency was necessary to form the basis for regeneration of the Docklands area.

Close the roads and traffic disappears
Article Abstract:
The best way to deal with serious traffic congestion in the UK may be to introduce an extensive road-closing programme. Research indicates that removing road space will cause a certain reduction in traffic levels, while building new roads simply generates more traffic. Closing roads does not cause more congestion in neighbouring areas, as some people choose not to make journeys at all, while others change to other forms of transport.
