'He was mad, like an aeroplane, then he crashed.' (reactions to drug Ecstasy)
Article Abstract:
Julian Rossiter, 24, attended the Liverpool nightclub Coconut Grove, took one Ecstasy tablet after five pounds sterling worth of speed and ended up in intensive care in hospital. After several hours of intense convulsions he went into a four-day coma in an extreme reaction to Ecstasy. During 1991 six people died from these symptoms. The reaction is similar to heatstroke, when the body heats up to about 40 degrees and the victim suffers internal bleeding. This may be caused by dehydration or the environment in which the drug is taken, or possibly certain people are predisposed to this type of reaction. Julian still has exhaustion, memory loss and a speech defect.

The agony and the ecstasy
Article Abstract:
A strong interest in Russian language and literature characterises the work of Hungarian composer Gyorgy Kurtag, who is beginning to gain international recognition at a late stage in his career. His works are vital and intense, but often very short, and this is why his career has built up very slowly. He has sometimes found it very hard to produce new work, and the sense of frustration which resulted allowed him to help Hungarian singer Ildiko Monyok when she lost the ability to speak following a car accident.

After the ecstasy, the cold light of day
Article Abstract:
German unification will take longer and cost more than expected as everything is worse than imagined. Increasing neo-Nazi attacks and the need to change the asylum laws are problems. In post-Communist Poland the economic policy is supported. There is an ideological split about abortion and religious teaching rather than about privatisation. The private sector has grown as Poland had been misdeveloped not underdeveloped. Czechoslovakia has agreed a Czech-Slovak split from Jan 01, 1993.
