Hills, lakes - and a cultural mountain
Article Abstract:
The cultural problems associated with moving from a very multicultural community in Oxford, England, to a community with clear cultural divisions in Snowdonia, Wales, are described. The English incomers to the community live in peaceful co-existence with the native Welsh, but there is no real integration between the two groups. Those who have chosen to move into the area generally have a very different outlook on life from those who have lived there all their lives. Children who move into the area generally find it easy to learn Welsh, but this is not the case for adults.

Drug smuggling: the ultimate inside stories
Article Abstract:
Drug couriers swallow about 100 small packages of heroin or cocaine or stuff body orifices with them. Customs officers have the unsavoury task of examining faeces to find the drugs, wrapped in balloons, condoms or cling film. Drugs leak into the bloodstream but the same result is shown when drugs have been taken legitimately. Sometimes packages burst and the courier dies from an overdose. Detained passengers may refuse to be strip searched and to have X-rays until a magistrate hears their case.

Is that plant poisonous? Ask Plato
Article Abstract:
Doctors at the UK's National Poisons Unit have joined with staff from Kew Gardens to develop Plato, the first ever interactive, computerised system of plant identification. This is currently being tested at a few hospitals, and it is hoped that it will soon be available to all casualty departments. It contains data on 200 plants or plant groups, allowing doctors to identify possibly poisonous plants from their seeds, fruits, leaves or bulbs.
