Afghans may find peace in the pipeline; two massive natural gas schemes could bring stability to a troubled area
Article Abstract:
Afghanistan is set to see its first large-scale private investment by western companies since it was invaded by the Soviet Union in 1979. Bridas Corp, an oil and gas concern with an Argentine director, and Unocal Corp of the US both plan to construct four-feet diameter natural gas pipelines 800 miles long. These will cross Afghanistan, avoiding the country's most difficult terrain, and will carry gas to southern Asia. The two companies are hoping to go ahead even though Afghanistan is still seen as unstable.
