Hitch-hiker's guide to reality

A recent InterCity advertisement suggesting that hitchhiking is the only cheaper way to travel between London and Manchester than buying a Super Apex train ticket prompted a comparison of the two modes of transport. It is generally accepted that hitchhiking is slower than travelling by train, but this is not necessarily the case. Hitchhiking is certainly very cheap, and can also be very addictive because of its unpredictable nature.

It's got everything except independence

Kazan, the capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, is rich in revolutionary history. The republic now calls itself a sovereign democratic state, but has still not gained independence from Russia. It is looking towards a future based on federalism, and is seeking a certain degree of local decision-making. Its economy is relatively strong, and it has many attractions for tourists.

The greater availability of Eurostar trains through the Channel tunnel from Waterloo station in London to Paris, France, makes it possible to take a day trip to Paris quite easily. The traveller can arrive in Paris at 11am, giving plenty of time for sightseeing, shopping and visiting restaurants. The latest departure from Paris is at 8.13pm.
