The great seabird rescues: we shouldn't bother
Article Abstract:
Work undertaken in the UK to rescue oiled seabirds, clean them and return them to the wild may be pointless, according to research undertaken by the British Trust for Ornithology. It costs between 10 pounds sterling and 30 pounds sterling to rescue and treat a guillemot, the bird which is most commonly rescued, but only one in 100 guillemots treated and returned to the wild will still be alive after a year. Even birds which seem to be very healthy when they are returned to the wild tend not to travel very far and generally die within a short time.

Parties unite to challenge council budgets
Article Abstract:
Liberal Democrat, Conservative and Labour councillors serving on Shropshire County Council are set to unite to set a budget higher than the capping limit laid down by the government, and a similar move is expected in Gloucestershire. The councillors are taking this action to protest against the most rigorous financial settlement for local government for many years. Most councils now expect to see a real decline in their spending, and are finding it very hard to set their budgets.

May all our tax rises be green
Article Abstract:
There are many ways in which a future Labour government in the UK could use new taxes to deal with environmental problems. This approach has the potential to considerably reduce pollution and to create many new jobs. However, many leading figures in the Labour party have serious reservations about 'green' taxes, especially if this makes fuel more expensive. It regards such taxes as taking from the poor while failing to prevent the rich from indulging in polluting activities.
