Holy Grail or poisoned chalice?
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Project involves scientists locating all the human genes to load into a computer the full set of genetic instructions that form the blueprint for a human being. It has been called modern biology's Holy Grail and the cost will have been around two billion pounds sterling. Scientists know that the blueprint for each person contains more than three billion letters of genetic text, a single gene error possibly causing crippling diseases such as cystic fibrosis or thalassaemia. Such diseases can now be detected in children before birth and children can sometimes be treated.

Journey to the beginning of time
Article Abstract:
Astronomers will begin developing new views on how the solar system was created as the Galileo space probe transmits data from Jupiter. The composition of Jupiter is likely to reflect the primordial elements from which the solar system was made, and probing this planet is very close to gaining an insight into the very beginnings of life in the solar system. This represents a watershed in space research, as astronomers will now no longer need to be passive observers.

Critical moment for Sizewell B
Article Abstract:
Sizewell B nuclear power station, which is now set to 'go critical,' is the first US-style pressurised water reactor in the UK. The project originally started in 1987, and is on a vast scale, including almost 37,000 valves to control the flow of the coolant water. There are four reactor coolant pumps, driving almost 20 tonnes of superheated water through the core every second.
