Hospital death rates show wide variations
Article Abstract:
UK Secretary of State for Health Frank Dobson has emphasized the need to obtain basic information about the performance of National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in order to establish where improvements need to be made. However, there have been warnings that new tables detailing performance indicators such as surgery and death rates do not necessarily offer a viable comparison between the performance of individual hospitals. NHS Confederation Chief Executive Stephen Thornton has warned that the tables should not lead to some hospitals being criticized for poor performance.

Funds revamp - just what the Dr ordered?
Article Abstract:
The UK government plans to replace GP fund-holding with primary care groups uniting GPs and community nurses and supported by the local health authority. There will be four options from which these groups can choose their level of involvement in the management of local primary care. The British Medical Association and the National Association of Fund-holding Practices believe that the new structure will encourage GPs to exercise stricter financial control. However, many fund-holding GPs believe that they have already reduced costs as far as possible.
