The decision by the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, England, to accept a donated kidney on the condition that it would only be given to a white person has attracted considerable controversy. However, the British Organ Donor Society believes that this is probably not the first case in which racist conditions have been attached to an organ donation. This case has prompted an ethical debate about whether donor organs can be accepted under such conditions because there is a serious shortage of donated organs.
