How angry is this man? Today we'll find out
Article Abstract:
Many people in Portadown, Northern Ireland, feel let down by Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, according to Denis Watson, who is standing against Trimble as an independent candidate for the new Northern Irish assembly. Watson has not been involved in politics before, but felt that he had little choice after the Ulster Unionists backed the Good Friday agreement. He was reluctant to stand as a candidate, but was requested to by many local people. He feels that he offers a reasoned alternative to Trimble.

Sectarian hate that strikes at the sacred heart of a community
Article Abstract:
Arson attacks on 10 Catholic churches in Northern Ireland by Loyalist terrorists have been greeted with great shock in a community already very accustomed to violence and hatred. UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, on a visit to Northern Ireland, has emphasized that the vast majority of ordinary people want to put violence behind them and look to the future. This view has been echoed by Protestants, many of whom have expressed sympathy with the Catholics and are helping them to repair the damage.

Turning the killers loose
Article Abstract:
The peace agreement in Northern Ireland will pave the way for the release of 440 criminals, including gunmen and bombers, in the period to 2000. This is regarded as a positive development by republicans, who have always claimed that murders and bombings are legitimate acts of war and that those responsible for them should be seen as political prisoners. However, the release of bombers and gunmen will be extremely painful for the families of their victims.
