Has the prize bookseller sold out?
Article Abstract:
Tim Waterstone read English at Cambridge and started work for his father's tea-broking company in Calcutta. He joined W H Smith in 1973 and established his own bookshop in 1982. He aimed for a friendly, efficient, well-stocked store. His shops are well organised, offer a book search service and publish their own reviewing catalogue. He disagrees with Pentos Group chairman Terry Maher who believes in abolishing the Net Book Agreement. In 1989 he sold to W H Smith. In 1993 he will open more shops in his American chain.

A giant stalks the high street
Article Abstract:
Amazon.com, an online bookseller with a catalogue of 2.5 million titles and more than 2 million customers in 160 countries, is establishing a presence in the UK, where it has purchased Bookpages, the second-largest online bookstore. It is possible that Amazon.com's arrival in the UK will spark off a book price war, both online and in high street book shops. Online services are already being offered by most high street book retailers, but discounting will prove extremely challenging for them.

Once upon a time there was a very angry bookseller ...
Article Abstract:
The managers of retail chain WH Smith have inflicted great damage on what was once a very successful family business, according to Tim Waterstone, who has seen his takeover bid for the business rejected. He worked for WH Smith until 1981, when he was dismissed. He subsequently set up the Waterstone's bookshop chain, and believes that he can now revive the fortunes of WH Smith. He sold the Waterstone's chain to WH Smith for 42 million pounds sterling in 1988.
