How is it that all these gloomy businessmen are employing more people?
Article Abstract:
Business confidence in the UK seems to be very low. However, the number of people in employment continues to rise, as does the number of hours being worked. This apparent inconsistency can be explained by the fact that most of the new jobs being created are part-time or short-term contracts. The rise in the number of hours being worked could be explained by a lag in the employment data, with both hours worked and job creation possibly beginning to fall in the near future, or by the possibility that the economy is actually still growing and will continue to do so.

Now's the time to bang the conference drum
Article Abstract:
The business community in the UK should look closely that the 1999 party conferences for signs of policies likely to affect its activities. There will be no definite statements of policy at the Labour party conference, and there will be no major new policies affecting business. However, there may be comments about the social implications of electronic commerce. At the Conservative party conference, the most interesting areas will be seen in practical approaches towards business, especially small firms.
