How the universe began
Article Abstract:
The Cosmic Background Explorer (Cobe) satellite discovery of echoes of the fossilised imprint of the galaxies' birth fourteen thousand million years ago was described to astronomers at the American Physical Society meeting in Washington on Apr 23 1992. This explains how the universe was born from the Big Bang, a problem that has been researched since the nineteen-sixties. Cobe detected lumpy radiation from the ripples of cosmic structure caused by the Big Bang by noting slight temperature variation. Further analysis may identify the dark matter of the universe. Cobe has been orbiting 500 miles above Earth since 1989.

Fall-out on the foreshore
Article Abstract:
The Dounreay Nuclear Power station has received little media or public attention since it was decommissioned, and has seemed for some time to have been forgotten. However, it has recently become the subject of controversy once more following a report by the department of health's Committee on the Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (Comare), which states that managers concealed vital information about an explosion there in 1977. Local people and environmentalists are now campaigning for action to be taken against those who failed to reveal the details.

Keepers offer pay cut to keep gates open
Article Abstract:
London Zoo, which has a 2 million pounds sterling deficit, plans to close in Sept 1992, but its keepers are willing to work for half their pay if the management resigns. Normally keepers work anti-social hours and earn about 100 pounds sterling a week. The Zoo Reform Group, consisting of Fellows of the Zoological Society of London, hope their plans for operating the 160-year-old zoo with conservation and captive breeding methods will be adopted by an independent group.
