How to tax your lawyer about the bill
Article Abstract:
It is important to gain a good idea in advance of how much a solicitor is likely to charge. If you are not satisfied with the cost of using a solicitor, then the issue should first be taken up with the solicitor in question. If the problem remains unresolved, then it is possible to take the matter further. For legal work which does not involve court proceedings, it is possible to obtain a Remuneration Certificate from the Law Society. This will involve the Law Society reviewing the client's bill to ensure that the charges are fair. It is also possible to request that a solicitor's bill be 'taxed' at a hearing.

Time off shouldn't be a privilege, but a right
Article Abstract:
UK employees currently have no statutory right to paid holiday, although employers are obliged to provide details of any holiday entitlement. This situation is set to change with the European Working Time Directive, which has a provision allowing employees to receive three weeks' paid holiday. This will rise to four weeks from Nov 1999. However, the directive states that the right to paid holiday is subject to qualifying conditions set by national law or practice, and this open to various interpretations.

A pregnant pause in the income stream
Article Abstract:
Having children can bring substantial financial burdens, especially if one of the parents gives up work to look after the children. It is important that pregnant women ensure that they are fully aware of their statutory rights to maternity leave and maternity pay, and of any additional maternity benefits which their employer may offer. Part-time workers are now entitled to the same statutory maternity rights as those working full time.
