Huge deficit looms, warn City experts
Article Abstract:
The UK government could be running an annual budget deficit of 20 billion pounds sterling by 2001 to 2002 if economic growth stagnates in 1999 and only revives gradually in 2000, according to accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. In contrast, the government believes that it will not be necessary to borrow to fund its spending plans. It plans to increase spending on the welfare state by 27 billion pounds sterling in the period to 2001, with pensions taking 14 billion pounds sterling, disability 7 billion pounds sterling, support for children 4 billion pounds sterling and the unemployed and income support 2 billion pounds sterling.

Tories give qualified support to Chancellor
Article Abstract:
Conservative backbenchers were surveyed about the recession as statistics revealed a large increase in unemployment in Aug 1992. Devaluation of the pound sterling was not favoured, although reduced interest rates were supported. Only three MPs (Members of Parliament) approved of steps being taken to invigorate the housing market. MPs intend to wait until the end of 1992 for signs of the recession lifting.
