Paedriatric nurse Jane Robertson was an aid worker with the Save the Children Fund in an Ethiopian emergency zone when she had her first baby. She resumed her duties when he was four weeks old and took him with her as she was breast-feeding. She spent a year appraising the value of the children's feeding programme in Hararrefugee camps. Agencies seek professionals with training and experience, so children usually accompany them. However, aid workers increasingly suffer security threats. Isolation and lack of electricity and drinking water were additional problems.

In the period 1988-1990, 238 women died in childbirth in the UK, 15 more than in the previous three-year period. Many doctors are now expressing concern about the level of maternal deaths, especially as the UK's record is much worse than the European average. The main causes of maternal death are pre-eclampsia and eclampsia, but researchers are also considering other factors. There is particular concern about the higher maternal death rates among women who have immigrated from less developed countries.

It is clear that many British children find school extremely boring. Children who find learning difficult tend to distance themselves from what is being taught, thus becoming bored. Similarly, very able children are often not sufficiently challenged, and this also leads to boredom. In many cases, boredom can be avoided by ensuring that children are actively involved in what is being taught. It is often very effective to encourage children to work in pairs or small groups.
