Article Abstract:

Jean Aske recalls that she did not immediately feel a bond with her father, Wallace Nichols, when she spoke to him for the first time when she was 46. Her white mother had met Nichols, who is a black American, during the second world war. She acknowledges that she was very frightened about meeting him for the first time, but now feels very pleased that she traced him. He recalls that he did not feel ready to reply when she first contacted him, even though he had been waiting for many years for her to do so. He now feels that, in a way, he has more love for her than for his other children.

UK: MORE DELAY ON NEW PASSENGER TRAINS

Article Abstract:

By now around 500 new passenger trains should have been introduced but only around 100 are actually in operation. The delay is being blamed on production delays at the manufacturing subsidiaries of Alsthom Siemens, Bombardier and Daimler-Benz, coupled with bureaucratic difficulties in speeding up new thorough safety checks. The Association of Train Operating Companies has pledged there will be 1,000 new trains on the rail network by the end of 2000.
