Mark Barton, who murdered 12 people in Atlanta, GA, including his estranged second wife and the two children from his first marriage, before committing suicide, was known as a private person. He was the prime suspect in the murders of his first wife and her mother in 1993, but always claimed that he was innocent. He murdered four people at the All-Tech Investment Group, then fled to Momentum Securities, where he had also been a client, and killed five more people.

Morgan Stanley merger creates $21bn US giant

The $10.2 billion merger announced by Dean Witter, Discover, the main street securities retailer in the US and a leading credit card concern, and investment bank Morgan Stanley could spark off consolidation moves by other securities companies. The deal, which was unexpected, will not endanger jobs in London or Europe, according to Morgan Stanley. The two companies regard the deal as a merger between equals, with very little overlap in their activities.

Documents found in Kabul, Afghanistan, suggest that Muslim fundamentalists from various Arab countries who went to Afghanistan to join the al-Qa'ida network may have ordered the destruction of two large Buddha statues in the Bamiyan Valley. The fundamentalists regarded the statues as pagan.
