I don't want to be in Labour's chain gang
Article Abstract:
The UK's new Labour government is placing considerable emphasis on a strong work ethic. It is promoting work as a moral obligation which is undertaken for the common good, and portrays those who are unwilling to work as being anti-society. This approach may have some good points, but fails to take into account the fact that employment will not necessarily make some sections of the population self-supporting. It is also important to realize that those who do not or cannot work still have some value to society.

So little time, so much to do in a wired world
Article Abstract:
The focus on power and wealth which characterised the 1980s has now died out, and people are no longer willing to tolerate conspicuous consumerism. However, they are still eager to own latest technology, such as laptop computers and mobile phones. Some observers believe that the use of technology has reached a point where it is becoming hard to separate reality from fantasy. However, there are still many people in society who are both financially poor and poor in the sense of lacking latest technology.

Even through our tears we were surprised by what we saw; we didn't realise how much we had changed
Article Abstract:
The death of Diana, Princess of Wales, will be long remembered in the UK as the most significant event of 1997. The scale of the reaction to her death made everybody aware that British society had changed. Many ordinary people showed great self-awareness and thoughtfulness, while many intellectuals simply made trite remarks. This tragic event served to show Britons how they are now, rather than how they were told they were or how they used to be.
