In a country waking up to a new future, these men have become potent symbols of Germany's nightmare past
Article Abstract:
The cases of Binjamin Wilkomirski and Hans Schwerte have highlighted the fact that Germany is still very ill at ease with its recent history and with the ways in which this history can be remembered. Wilkomirski wrote a book in which he claimed to have spent his early years in concentration camps, where he witnessed appalling atrocities. His experiences have subsequently been called into question. Schwerte, the former rector of Aachen University, managed to cover up the fact that he was a high-ranking SS officer and ideologue.
