In the open
Article Abstract:
Most people in the UK now accept that the examination results of individual schools should be published, in considerable contrast to the outcry which greeted the first school performance league tables in 1991. However, there is still concern that league tables are not adjusted to reflect the school's intake and its performance in areas other than examinations. League tables are forcing schools to adopt a more corporate culture, developing strategies to ensure that they maximise their output.

Getting the habits that lead to success
Article Abstract:
It is vital that parents and teachers make children aware of the key factors in success. They must encourage children to be organized, persistent and to get on well with others, and must attempt to boost their confidence. Educational initiatives will not be successful unless they can build on these foundations. Children should be encouraged to work towards specific goals, and praise should be very precise. Children must know where they stand and what is expected of them.
