Into Karabakh with Baronness Cox

Baroness Cox, a House of Lords deputy speaker and member of the Andrei Sakharov Foundation, likes to get involved in righting injustices and organised medical supplies from the Christian Solidarity International (CSI) for Nagorny Karabakh, Azerbaijan. Karabakh, a 1,700-square-mile area, belonged to Armenia until 1923. Azerbaijan imposed a blockade when Karabakh wished to unite with Armenia in 1988 and fighting continues in 1992. There is no running water, electricity, sewage, rubbish collection or communication system. Food shortage is serious.

Notable dance performances occurred in late 1998 and early 1999 in Paris, France, New York, NY. Awards were given in the Classical Competition of the eighth Concours International de Danse de Paris. Choreographer Eric Dunlap staged a science fiction fantasy. Paris Opera Ballet dancer Isabelle Guerin performed George Ballanchine roles with the New York City Ballet. The Paris Opera Ballet's young dancer Nicolas Le Riche performed in La Bayadere. Kevin Wynn offered a strong choreography of "Vicious Beauties" and "To Repel the Demons."
