Article Abstract:

The record number of corporate merger deals which have been agreed so far in 1995 have generally attracted the approval of investors, thus boosting the share value of both of the companies involved. This goes against the traditionally accepted view that mergers generally do not add value for either of the parties. However, this trend is unlikely to continue, and observers believe that many merger deals now being considered will bring difficulties for customers, shareholders and managers.

Investment expert Jim Rogers first came to public attention through his partnership with George Soros in the early years of the Quantum Fund. He now invests as a hobby, and teaches investment at a business school in New York. He was one of the first investment managers to take emerging markets seriously, and later undertook a journey round the world by motorbike, purchasing blue-chip stocks in countries which particularly appealed to him.

Investors find it relatively straightfoward to value bonds, but this is not the case with equities. Most investors have to use the price/earnings ratio, dividend yield or similar basic measures to assess equity value, but this tends to be an unsatisfactory approach. This is particularly the case with earnings, which have proved to be a very unreliable way of valuing shares.
