Islamists promise Algerian elite a bloody Ramadan
Article Abstract:
Algeria's government and army will face an aggressive attack from the country's Islamists during the period of Ramadan. The Islamic Salvation Army (ISA), the military unit of the outlawed Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), has called for attacks to be stepped up, and has already marked its intentions with a car bomb in the centre of Algiers which killed 42 people and wounded 384. In 1994, the Ramadan period was used by armed groups in Algeria to increase calls for anti-government activity.

Where men in black come out to prey
Article Abstract:
The Algerian government is committing acts of violence against Islamist resistance fighters, according to the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) and the Armed Islamic Group (GIA). It is claimed that prisoners are no longer put on trial, but are simply executed by the government in its efforts to eliminate all Islamist leaders. Moves by government troops to track down resistance fighters have led to villages being destroyed and women and children being killed.

A city where even mourners go in fear
Article Abstract:
Death and violence have now affected almost all families in Algiers, where the actions of Islamic militants cause great fear. The militants have struck in all types of places, and are now even using remote-controlled bombs. Middle class people who speak French feel that they are particularly vulnerable targets, as are foreigners.
