Israelis block West Bank commerce
Article Abstract:
The division of the areas in which 2.5 million Palestinians live in Gaza and the West Bank into separate economic entities has had a very negative impact on the Palestinian economy. Indeed, the European Commission has issued figures indicating that Palestinian per capita gross national product has declined by 35% since the signing of the Oslo Accords between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993. In particular, Israeli checkpoints are hampering economic activity in West Bank and Gaza. For individual Palestinians, financial problems are arising because they cannot travel to work in Israel.

US faces long haul to peace in Middle East
Article Abstract:
US secretary of state Warren Christopher will find it extremely difficult to obtain a ceasefire in Lebanon. The situation there is now very tense, in marked contrast to the much more positive atmosphere of recent months, when the US seemed to be enjoying considerable influence in the Middle East. The Israeli attack on Lebanon has created a very sensitive situation in the Middle East as a whole.

A war the Israelis can all support
Article Abstract:
There is widespread popular support in Israel for the current offensive against Lebanon. This contrasts strongly with the situation in 1982, when many Israelis were opposed to fighting Lebanon. The present conflict is seen as justified, with most people believing that Israel is simply defending itself and fighting off the threat from Lebanese guerrilla organisation Hizbollah.
