It beat smallpox. So now what else can it do?
Article Abstract:
Genetically modified vaccinia, the vaccine which helped wipe out smallpox, might be used against other viruses. Enzo Paoletti, a scientist who found out how to modify vaccinia with the genes of other microbes, believes that this is possible, but it has yet to be proven on humans. There is some doubt about using the vaccinia on humans, or on animals which come into contact with humans, for fear of causing reactions or interaction with other viruses with an unknown outcome. Paolotti and colleagues are working on the vaccine to make a product which hardly has side effects.

Bacterial secrets of the deep blue sea
Article Abstract:
The recent discovery by US and Japanese scientists working near the surface of the sea off the coast of Japan of a bacterium which can produce a very strong antibiotic could lead to a change in the source of new antibiotic-producing microcrobes. Over recent years, the traditional process of obtaining antibiotics from the soil has become less successful, and scientists could now turn to the oceans, where there may be many other new antibiotics. Research will now focus on whether the antibiotic can be used to treat human infections.
