Tehran softens stance on Gulf island dispute
Article Abstract:
At a meeting of the Gulf Co-operation Council foreign ministers the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAR) objected to Iran's refusal to discuss ending its occupation of Abu Musa and the islands Greater and Lesser Tunb. In Nov 1971 Iran and Sharjah agreed to share administrative jurisdiction of Abu Mus, but when Iran built a port and a runway, travellers had to enter under Iranian procedures. This deflects national interest from economic problems and may be part of Iranian plans to become the supreme Gulf power.

PLO persuaded to rejoin peace talks
Article Abstract:
Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Yasser Arafat, who is considered a national symbol, persuaded his negotiating team to return to the Washington peace talks on Dec 08 1992. Although the Palestinians may have deemed the Israeli proposals unsuitable they could not be seen to be preventing progress. They have doubts about president-elect Bill Clinton's statements. Prime Minister of Israel Yitzhak Rabin refused to accept UN Security Council Resolution 242 which forbids territory acquisition by force.
