Italy faces life after Communism
Article Abstract:
The Christian-Democrat-Socialist Party alliance have agreed that the next prime minister will be Bettino Craxi. The Italian constitution requires elections every five years for the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. The system of proportional representation reflects the country's political diversity and produces consensus government. This year is the first election since the fall of the Berlin Wall; the Communist threat has gone. Electoral law has changed to a single preference as any party list and there are now 54 parties. The four main parties may fail to obtain 50% of the seats.

Israel: Rome's old problem
Article Abstract:
The Vatican and Israel commenced diplomatic relations in 1992 after Syria and Palestinians had begun discussions with Israel. Ancient prejudices were removed in the 'Nostra Aetate' in 1965 but full diplomatic relations were not instigated. A commission will discuss bilateral matters about how the Church functions in Israel. It will address the legal position of Church schools, the status of priests and tax-free standing of all Church institutions.
