It's a chill wind that bodes higher insurance premiums
Article Abstract:
UK insurance companies are likely to introduce significant price rises for household policies over winter 1996-1997. This follows a period in which prices for both building and contents insurance have fallen. However, payouts for claims of property insurance rose dramatically in the second quarter of 1996, and this is prompting insurance companies to increase their rates. The size of the increase will be partly determined by claims resulting from weather conditions over winter 1996-1997.

This trend will be accelerated by the introduction in autumn 1996 of the Ogden Tables, which courts use to assess claims in third-party motor injury cases. However, the market will remain extremely competitive in the foreseeable future.
